Barker, an open landscape exhibition with paintings, collage and photography curated by Jonathan Hughes and a solo exhibition by Hughes himself.

Suuster's work involved portraiture and she used a lush twenties inspired palette and a very smooth brush style. The subjects in her paintings all looked natural until you start focusing and I think they resembled what body dysmorphia look like to someone. Her pencil work, which formed the second part of her exhibition was delicate in hand.

Casey-St. Pierre's installation had artefacts, photographs by Adrian Arbub and other reportage photographs from her personal collection, poems by Lee Tree and several newspaper cuttings as well as natural soundscapes recorded from the area. I do remember the protests that happened in 1995 due to the M65 extension and the cuttings down of ancient woodland. It was emotive seeing people who I used to socialise with, some of which have died. I enjoyed her installation.

My exhibition coincided with the three day Countryside Comes to Town festival that we had at the Bureau. I made over twenty assemblages from found wood, signage and older assemblages that I have shown but didn't really work. It took 3 months to collect and build the work with some using sounds and kinetic aspects.

The landscape exhibition entitled All Around Us was a mixed bag of paintings, photography and collage. There was eighteen artists who exhibited such as Hughes, Valerie Savchits, Julia Entwistle and Lewis Oldham. I really liked Oldham's body landscapes, for me they were the highlights as this is the work that I am mostly fond of. I thought the exhibition was a success in that it brought more established and out of town artists into the building.

Hughes's solo exhibition Doodlism is up at the moment. This work is portraiture in the style of the poster/paintings of Picasso and are very vivid in colour and guttural in technique. I think they counterbalance the pristine aspects of selfies that are on social media were multiple apps can be used to make a bad photo good. I think they make a great collection and the next step for his work is Croatia.
The work, which is identical to this that was sent to the Windrush Initiative in Preston as part of the Black History Month is still up and is being talked about daily.

The Windrush Initiative is a collection of black memorabilla from old records, images, collecting tins, books, artworks and artefacts that chronicle Black History. I feel proud that my work is still relevant and being used as part of this exhibition.

Best place to start is the Blackburn Print Festival I suppose. This was a journey in the making with having to be cancelled and then have a slight return. There was the typical handicrafts that are found at every crafty vintage fair and some photography but there was some stand out pieces. Aaliyah Hussain from Manchester produced some Bauhaus inspired prints, quite a few Londonesque linoprints and some work from local artists. I included two of my A0 Aphorisms that I did two years previously as my Insults Squared were deemed too offensive, again. This was strange though as there was a wall of plastercast vaginas up on a wall and a room where the artist, Claire Doyle was performing and plastercasting her vagina. Her work was called Modify My Vagina which was highly conceptual, quite good but odd for a Print Festival. I did a meet and greet in my studio and sold a little bit of work.

My second prose, [to shoot the bore], is finished now and I have bound, packaged and numbered each edition that is five in total and tried to sell these at the Fair. I have to work on how to to get the prose out to a larger market.

I have started several projects which range from photography, larger aphorisms and now in control of the Blackburn Film Club all of which I'll talk about individually.
The only information I got was Cultural Identity and with half finished work in the studio for Black History Month, I decided that I could enter that. The work was and still is based on three base insults that you can call someone. I call the piece 'Insult Squared' and to call it as it is, 'Nigger Queer Cunt'.
As it was part of BHM and was shown partially there (Nigger Queer), the concept still rings true that each time each word is said it is like a punch to the system. I have black relatives and friends and know the damage that the 'n' word causes and being a gay man myself, the 'q' word is still felt with every punch and kicking that I have had to endure all my life. I have even been called 'Queer Cunt' several times so this piece is highly offensive and deeply personal.
I have used a typewriter as that each word has been typed as coarse as possible and sometimes are illegible. I feel that this has been an endurance piece emotionally and physically. I hope that the curators of the exhibition see through the offensiveness and see the piece as a viable piece for the show.
An Exhibition by Rianon Francis

Rianon Francis is a multi media artist who has worked with a range of media including drawing and painting, collage, found objects, collected items and assemblages as well as photography.

She has looked at religion, folklore, cult and ritual and has been drawn to how society copes with death. Rianon makes collections and currently makes amulets and talismans as well as 'matchbox art'.

This series of photographs stems from a project exploring how in Britain we 'process' the body after death. The artist spent time in a number of funeral parlours and then returned with a camera to capture the objects used.
The Transient Aspect of Life.
I chose to add these large scale to Rianon's exhibition to add the fluidity of life and death. All is moveable and malleable in life and everything is connected.
I am part of the CIC that runs the centre and now an unpaid Director of Art and the artist-in residence. We aim to bring art and music as well as dance and workshops to the old cotton town of Blackburn.

It has been quite a good process but now we have amenities to pay for, we need to put on more events and at the moment, the live events and club nights are the biggies...I need to get more art in to make some money.

I'm still making work. I feel it is more text/collage based though. I have been working with braille and simple words but would like to complete textural aphorisms that could be tread by the blind and look good as collage. I have used words such as the five senses and they look ok as stand alone art pieces.

For last months ArtSPACE we had a BBC initiative called Get Creative which is a year long project to get the arts pushed onto the community. We had a full day event with varied activities, I organised the much later event ART AUCTION. This was a rushed few weeks collecting work from local and regional artists. There was collage, sculpture, painting and photography. I selected a collage that I am working on called 'The Measure of Purity' which is a Malevich inspired piece based on social media and vacuous narcissism. A young guy bought my work which was nice. and quite ironic.

I have produce the second part of 'the first waves of nothing' which is titled 'to shoot the bore'. 'to shoot the bore' is produced as a pamphlet book which is displayed differently than the previous one but that could change. I have already sold a copy of the pamphlet/book and need to make some more for the Blackburn PrintFest.

Blackburn PrintFest is the focus of my attention at the minute. This is the first of its kind in Blackburn and I need to stock up on the pages of the book. The 'bore' book is still in it's editing phase though so I need to get typing quick to get to the endpoint. I do have an idea with some carbon paper that I have acquired though that I need to experiment with.

Pixel Lust II has just finished and I exhibited five framed 8-Bit Dot Matrix pencil studies but when the art sale came, I think my work was too expensive or just too complex for Blackburn. I feel like I'm wasting my time at the moment but I will persevere.

I'm in a strange position at the minute. My studio in Manchester has been condemned due to fire safety and general neglect and I have moved most of my things into the Bureau and been given a much larger space but I don't feel part of the Blackburn is Open thing. BiO is a initiative to get art into disused places but I seem to be sidelined several times and have to swim against the tide, which believe me is quite hard.

On the plus side, I have been given a good little Sony videocamera that Im going to use for my monologue videopiece based on 'the first waves of nothing'. The filming for this will start real soon and I think I might just have the right guy to perform it. Also Liz n' Lils, a little vintage tearoom in Blackburn, have shown me around their top floors and given the onus to film/photograph the place as I deem fit. Which is really good of them.

I have been playing with pictorial collage again and trying new techniques. My studio is full of clippings and this has kickstarted my 'Dead Rockstars' series. Together with taking over Blackburn Film Club and playing with collage, this is where I am at the moment.

Well, the beginnings of 'bore' was started earlier but with having displayed 'nothing' in Manchester and Rennes and having the second installment published in NOUS magazine, writing began in earnest.

There was a mental health tinge to the first prose and the new prose is quite warlike/violence based. I don't know why that happens, it's just the way the editing happens. I have already bound the second prose into a pullout pamphlet.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12819991576700364222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1676907212662351465.post-14953196731409571142014-11-20T13:37:00.001+00:002014-11-20T13:37:16.503+00:00Images of work Aug-Nov
I have still got my studio within the old church but the students moved out during August and as a whole in Sept. This last push was made by Blackburn is Open as they believed the cubicles would have been taken over by other artists, but this wasn't the case.
So, the students moved into an old shop in Preston city centre that is owned by the uThink art company and they were excited by this as they thought it was a permanent position but alas, it wasn't to be. They tried to get me involved with the venture but I saw the flaws from the beginning and distanced myself away. This resulted in my lonely tenureship within the church and my becoming in the role of guardian of the building.

The students finally got thrown out off the shop because of a Black History Month exhibition in which I made two pieces called 'Nigger Queer Cunt" which was three typewritten squares of each word repeated until eligible. The concept was to purge each word from my mind and to highlight the obvious contempt of the gay community within black and Caribbean culture. My work wasn't shown and I haven't had any feedback. I discussed my piece to the gallery owbers and they were pleased with the outcome but I think the conclusion to the work spoke for itself.

As well as this work, I was involved with an exhibition held in Sheffield called Play by Sharon Mossbeck and Michael Borkowsky. This show was based on computers and computer programming based artworks and for this one, I exhibited two of my dot matrix drawings. My participation with this show was quite surprising as I have never met either of the two and it was Sharon who saw my work on facebook. She liked my work and suggested that I took part and I'm glad I did. I couldn't go to the opening night as I was involved with another show in Manchester as part of the Free For Arts Festival 2014 - Free For All Exhibition.

For the Free For Arts show I continued the 'the first waves of nothing' installation piece. This is the continuation of the edited prose that I have been working on through the summer and is now reaching its zenith. I basically retype the prose within the gallery where I am exhibiting and with this, the prose evolves with each sitting. I have now exhibited the piece at least three times now and together with the original, I have now five editions. The latest edition was typed at the FFAF exhibition and now is on show at the Soup Kitchen event called Malentandu-Nous magazine. This event is on tonight and I wont be typing the work here as this part of the project has finished and part two has been started.

So with that being the art activity, I have been involved with an ad hoc gallery within the old church which I have called the Corridor. I have had three exhibitions that are a month long. As I work in the studio, I leave the front door open and the public wanders in and I interact with them. I have shown the Lucien Fellowes work with the rusty nuts and bolts and the large scale road side markings, an open/varied exhibition with work that had been left behind by the students and lately, work by a guy called Ted Lynch and some of my assemblages.

The building now holds events such as a Halloween Ball, a rave and this weekend, Back to Blackburn starring Dave Haslam and Wayne Hemmingway. I have had work damaged in both of the former events and I had to take work down for the latter for some reason. I just hope I don't have work damaged at the weekend. There is a committee now involved with the church in which I am involved so I will push the gallery and have my say about the recent events. It is getting quite interesting now as they are so many people wanting there input with the building. I'm just glad that the building is being used and not just shut up, stagnating.

Oh, and lest I forget...Papergirl has now moved to Blackburn. This is the project by Alex Gallagher who sends out invites to artists to create and donate work to her so she can deliver these to the general public in the style of an American newspaper boy. This project has been carried out in Berlin and in Manchester. I visited the Manchester version a few years ago when I was studying there, I participated in the Blackburn one. The exhibition for the Blackburn one was held last week and the handing out of artworks is this Saturday so I look forward to the response to locals from a northern town to free art.
This grave can be found within the graveyard at St John's the Evangelist Church in Blackburn. It is where I am having my art residency and exhibition. It has as much symbology from the Masons that you can shake a stick at. It is pointing straight up to the Masonic Lodge in Blackburn, which is a coincidence.

It has:

The letter G
the Globes of the Stars and the Earth
the All Seeing Eye
the Compass and Set Square
the Arch and Centre Stone
the Jacob's Ladder
the Seven Stars
the Moon and the Sun
the Key to Heaven
The Pyramid
and others that I can't make out.
Tea Stained Edited Prose in 24 Installments

This was the result of the six week long open studio/residency at St John's the Evangelist Church in Blackburn. I decided to work with found wood that I searched for in the evirons of the church. Thankfully, a building was being converted from shops into a mosque so I was able to find some good materials. I have some left over for my next project. In total I have made nine different assemblages for the church but this new one has been a new concept in how I make them. I made the assemblage from the first to last piece found. I quite like this new way of making them.

The Edited Prose is called 'The First Waves of Nothing'. I named it after a phrase that is used in the second installment and fitted in with what I was doing. This piece took me two and a half years and certain piss taking to complete and a further six weeks to type up. I have used tea stained/dyed paper that I have experimented with. I started with too much tea and now know the correct method/times.

The piece is a 22 paged foray into a split second of someone's mind as they walk through the street. It is very schizophrenic in tone. I found it hard to read. The text is wholly grammer free and carries no punctuation.
Domesticity | 35mm Glass Slides, 3 Photographs, a Brick and a 35mm View Finder

This is my brand new project and I think of leaving the concept to speak for it self. The photographs needs to be a lot bigger though. I ned to find a relevant exhibition to show this work.
I bought a selection of glass 35mm photograph slides for a ridiculous price of 50p. Most of these were of some trip or other but I found three gems that depicted a lovely story. Basically, a photo of a car and holiday home, a man washing up and the couple smiling. The photos are dated in the mid sixties and I left them to one side.

A few weeks later, we took a trip to Fleetwood and visited some charity shops. I bought a backlight/batteryless 35mm viewfinder and looked at these slides for the first time in full blown colour. I took the the slides to the local camera shop and in now waiting for the images to be blown up.

I know how I want to present these photos and have a concept/installation planned out and took a mock up photo of what it'll look like. The piece will be titled [domesticity] and hopfully be shown soon. It is a very honest piece of work and is free from all baggage and pretense. I am very excited.
Sonny J. Barker _ Untitled 2014

These are selected works from the main members of a newly founded art collective called New Wave Arts [n|w|a]. We were founded at UCBC/Blackburn College to allow art to be shown in unusual places within the Blackburn and its environs. This was our inaugural exhibition and as a duo, Me and Lee Wareing are showing in October within the Free For Arts Festival 2014.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12819991576700364222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1676907212662351465.post-63721565171317076902014-07-16T02:47:00.000+01:002014-07-16T02:47:21.531+01:00ExhibitionIt has been really exciting of late. Previously, I wrote of the logistics of the exhibition and the woes of putting on the show. We are now entering the seconds week with having a handful of visitors popping in, the director of Manchester International Festival paying a visit and having a drunken drink and draw burlesque night last night. When I sat there drawing I looked up at the stained glass of the crucifixion and seeing the burlesque dancers contorting and posing, I thought we were going to hell.
the work was curated in a way that we selected disused offices and then placed work within each cubicle. I was quite happy with the work and the opening went quite wildly. I didn't enter in an artist persona so came as myself. I was sober enough until after the 20 strong drum orchestra did their thing with beats reverberating around the room. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we raised £350 in the art auction.
We are now residing in our open studios and working on our site specific work. I am working on my prose, Lee is doing his stencils, Jodie is monoprinting and the others are painting/drawing. We have taken over the old Citizen Advice Bureau so the studios are quite compact. Most of us are there daily and creating work.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12819991576700364222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1676907212662351465.post-90721746052908006742014-06-25T13:13:00.001+01:002014-06-25T13:13:10.851+01:00round-upSince the end of my AA2A and the exhibition that I had at the Blackburn is Open shop in the town centre I have been extremely busy. For some reason, I have been fucked over by UCBC/Blackburn College and not got invited to the conference based on the AA2A, not met Wayne Hemmingway or been given the status of artist in residence because I am classed as a traitor. I had my exhibition outside the parameters of the institution because the management didn't have the ability to understand that a disused and decrepit building was unusable for any event. This is a long story and I am so angry at them.

So, I have been asked to help, facilitate, curate a show involving the 2nd year Fine Art students who I had worked with over the year. The management kept insisting on using this disused building and the students wouldn't allow it so they are now organising their own show at a disused church called St John's the Evangelist. It is a perfect location and the opening night is next Thursday, 3rd July. The only problem is that we having gained entry into the building so we can't tidy up and hang the work. The management at the college are reluctant to sign the essential paper work.

We have a band playing on the night, an art auction, open studios planned and the exhibition itself to show. We have guests invited and a beautiful building to use. This is taking all my time and also, I have just finished my artworks for the show. I'm very tentative about the show already but now I am losing sleep. Well, if the college fails us, we have the management at BiO to help us out and sign the lease, which is superb.

This was done on aged/vintage paper with black tea, I also typed it up with my newish Olivetti Lettera 25 typewriter which I got bought for in a junk shop. It is a lovely machine.

I have worked on the concept for the edited prose since around Winter 2011 and is an ongoing and extremely hard piece of work. I was given the book The Cell by Stephen King for Christmas 2011 from my sister. It was well read, had no dust jacket and wrapped up in a blue plastic bag. I was a gift from a loved one who doesn't have too much money. I gave up reading pulp horror quite some time ago but don't punch a gift horse in the mouth or something. I love my sister so I wanted to make good use of the book.

With the book, I have svanned the pages and delete/edit the book in time with music, rhythm patterns of the bus/train and lately, whilst on codeine and wine. The coherency is a little jagged at some times but it is all part of the process.

From my initial deletions in the book I type up whatever is left into a word file. What is left is a piece of work without grammer. I then scan/read the chapter-sized chunks and type up on the Olivetti the work into a script-like prose.

I have read some of Finnegan's Wake by Joyce but this work is similar in style and that is it. Burroughs is an influence and since having my exhibition, I have been recommended to read Tom Philips's The Humument. Philips took an old medical book and screenprinted on every page leaving phrases and words, in a more design/art style than I'm doing now. What is interesting is that the lady who recommended the book actually took part in a performance at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery in around 1983 as part of an opera styled performance. Tom Philips was in the audience.

My original intention is to record two readers of my prose and as I have left the work with no grammer/punctuation, I'd like to create a loop effect where they fall out of sync because of personal style of grammer etc. Bruce Nauman did a work called Good Boy/Good Girl which he recorded a black man and a white woman (actors) read from a script with supplanting girl and boy on each script. It was interesting to see the response that the dialogue had on each actor. I saw the piece at the Hamburger Bahnhopf in Berlin at a retrospective an few years ago and enjoyed it. Nauman is a huge influence on my interplay work.

So, I wanted to record two talking heads. one old person and a younger person and play each actor on seperate screens. I know now what the dialogue is and what the general scan reads and will be interested in the outcome of the other two. I would like to produce a handmade book based on the script and that will be my hard copy artwork.
